The CoCoMAD Scientists
Who we are:
Dr Aimee Goodall
Aimee is a metallurgist who works in the steel works in South Wales. She studied forensic science at university and found the material science parts so fascinating that she went to on get a doctorate studying how heat treatments change the microstructure of steel. In her spare time, she can be found tending to her tomatoes and courgettes in the garden or with her head in a good book.

Dr Naomi Curati
I am public engagement manager for the Mathematics of Waves and Materials research group at the University of Manchester. We work on the mathematical aspects of both materials and waves (including acoustic, elastic, electromagnetic and water waves). Research in our group is multi-disciplinary; stretching across chemistry, engineering, physics and materials science as well as maths. FB / Twitter / Insta /

Dr Adrian Burden
Adrian is a STEM advocate and Tech. Entrepreneur. He co-founded the social enterprise Innovate Malvern CIC which stages the annual Malvern Science in the Park each summer and the annual Malvern Festival of Innovation every autumn.

Thinktank
Thinktank is Birmingham’s award winning science museum, from steam engines and talking robots through to gurgling guts and a chocolate wrapping machine there is something to inspire everyone with science and technology.
Neil Drury
Hi, I’m Neil and I am a lecturer in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham. I am a physicist by training and a lecturer on our foundation year in Engineering and Physical sciences. My co-presenters are Erin and Ada, who both attend Cotteridge School.
Jon Wood
Just because Jon isn't a scientist, doesn't mean he can’t DO science. He loves to turn great science ideas into things you can do at home. Your shed or kitchen can be the best laboratory.. He normally makes science shows on stage, but today, he’s going to do some science in his living room and garden.’
Sarah Cosgriff
Sarah is a science communicator from Swindon. She originally trained as a biologist, particularly looking at how cells move under a microscope. She loves showing people how to do science at home and telling different stories about scientists.
Dr Chris Hamlett
With the help of BrumSciComm, Chris introduced science to CoCoMAD in 2017 with support from Royal Society of Chemistry. Chris loves surface science, bubbles and foams and is based in Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham and is the Henry Royce National Outreach Officer for Materials Science and Engineering and coordinates the activities of the UK-wide 'Discover Materials' group.
Mo Rassul
Hey! I am Mo, an exuberant neuroscientist; I started with humble beginnings as an artist, however the siren song of science later lured me in and now I am lost in a haze of fun science.
I’ll be on the live-stream Science Social between 2pm and 5pm and I’m happy to answer your questions about neuroscience.
Lizzie Driscoll
School of Chemistry, The
University of Birmingham
Hello CoCoMAD goers! I'm Lizzie and a current battery PhD researcher in Prof. Peter Slater's group working towards the next generation of Li-/Na-ion batteries. This type of battery can be found in smart phones, laptops and electric vehicles - they are essentially all around us!
I'll be present at the virtual festival talking about the Battery Jenga experiment with Prof. Peter Slater and answering any questions you may have on this topic!

Prof. Peter Slater
School of Chemistry, The University of Birmingham
I'm Peter Slater and a professor of materials chemistry at the University of Birmingham with over 25 years experience researching into novel energy generation and storage materials. Today, I will be joined by one of my PhD students - Lizzie Driscoll - where we'll be talking about rechargeable Li-ion batteries, which are found in smart phones, laptops and more recently electric vehicles, and how we can use jenga to explain this type of battery.
Join us for the Q&A session where we can discuss these batteries and answer any questions you may have.

Ilija Rašović
Ilija is a materials scientist with dual roles at the University of Birmingham between the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences (LANS) Hub and the Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) college, where he teaches modules with an interdisciplinary science focus and champions the importance of science communication. He also carries out research on the synthesis of new fullerene-based materials for use in biomedical applications.
